MLK Day – Cleaning Up Clear Lake’s School Garden

Article by: Miles Lane and Adele Eslinger

Check out our garden work! This past Monday, January 20th, United General District 304 staff Adele Eslinger, Miles Lane, and Seth Kosanovich transformed the Clear Lake Elementary School garden to be more open, with added room for a pollinator strip. By the numbers, we stripped away over 20 feet of fence, laid over 30 cardboard boxes down, and moved over 30 cubic feet of mulch and compost.

We were fortunate to have Skagit Valley Herald photojournalist Ava Ronning there to capture the day. Ava reported about our garden, some of the grants we are doing work for, and the connections that students get to make in the garden. Her work was published in the Skagit Valley Herald’s newspaper, Instagram, and website. Read what Ava wrote here: Work party held in school garden as part of MLK Day | Education | goskagit.com.

Our garden day was part of a National Day of Service, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. and his commitment to public service. We plan on hosting more garden workdays in March to enhance Sedro-Woolley school gardens. We will then be teaching students about seeds, plant life cycles, and other ecological and biological phenomena in the gardens starting in April.
